Hearing of public authorities and persons on refugee and migrant issues during the meeting of the Third Sub - Commission of the GNCHR
The Third Sub-Commission of the Greek National Commission for Human Rights on the Application of Human Rights to Aliens held a hearing of public authorities and persons on Thursday, 18 June 2020 via teleconference. The hearing focused mainly on push backs and is a part of the overall thorough and long-standing involvement of the GNCHR with refugee and migrant issues.
We had the pleasure of welcoming Mr. Manos Logothetis, Secretary General for the Reception of Asylum Seekers, Lieutenant General Dimitris Mallios from the Hellenic Police Headquarters and the Ministry for Migration Policy, Lieutenant Admiral George Karagiorgos, Chief of Operations of the Coast Guard/Hellenic Coast Guard, Mr. Mark Kelly, Vice-President of the Council of Europe Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT), representatives from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR), the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Greek Ombudsman, the President of the Greek Council for Refugees, representatives of Amnesty International and a significant number of organisations with field experience on issues of refugees and migrants. The discussion was sincere and open.
The GNCHR continues to systematically work on issues of migrants and refugees by closely monitoring the developments in legislation and in the management of these populations in our country. In addition, the GNCHR steadily assists the State by providing advice for the adoption of legislative, administrative or other measures in accordance with the international and European commitments of the country and guided by the respect for the rights of every person present in the Greek territory.
