GNCHR at OHCHR expert roundtable on the international dimensions of the EU Digital Omnibus

The Greek National Commission for Human Rights (GNCHR) participated in an expert roundtable organised by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Brussels on 18 May 2026.

GNCHR was represented by Dr. Christos Tsevas, GNCHR Human Rights Advisor, who delivered an intervention during the meeting.

The event focused on the international dimensions of the proposed EU Digital Omnibus, highlighting the growing global impact of EU digital legislation and the importance of aligning it with international human rights law. Discussions covered:

  • reflections on the international dimensions of the Digital Omnibus,
  • the international implications of proposed changes to the EU Artificial Intelligence Act,
  • the role of Article 77 entities under the EU AI Act in safeguarding fundamental rights, including their powers to access documentation and assess compliance where risks to rights arise.

Particular attention was paid to how the role of these entities could serve as a model for international AI governance frameworks.

Participants included representatives of European Union institutions, international and non-governmental organisations, National Human Rights Institutions as well as the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI).

The UN Human Rights Office intends to publish general key messages and outcomes of the roundtable.
