Participation of the GNCHR in the "Strengthening Corporate Responsibility and Human Rights Compliance under the CSDDD in Greece" research

Background
Human rights are at the heart of the European Union and its Member States, forming a fundamental pillar of their legal and policy frameworks. At the same time, businesses play a crucial role in ensuring the effective protection and promotion of human rights, as their operations impact societies and the environment. Recognizing this interconnected responsibility, the European Union Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) mandates companies to uphold human rights and environmental obligations across their entire value chain, reinforcing corporate accountability and sustainable business practices.
The Greek National Commission for Human Rights (GNCHR), the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) is the independent advisory body to the Greek State and the national institution for the protection and promotion of human rights in Greece, monitoring compliance with national and international human rights standards.
The Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR), the National Human Rights Institution of Denmark, is implementing a project titled "Building capacity of national human rights institutions and strengthening policy outcomes on business and human rights”, supported by the Laudes Foundation. This initiative seeks to empower European NHRIs to effectively contribute to the transposition and implementation of the CSDDD.
Description of the Project
In this context, DIHR has engaged GNCHR in a consultancy agreement to strengthen corporate responsibility and human rights compliance under the CSDDD in Greece. The objective is to enhance GNCHR’s capacity to support the transposition of the directive into Greek law and facilitate stakeholder engagement on responsible business conduct and human rights.
The consultancy involves two primary activities:
- Collaboration with an external expert to develop a report on corporate due diligence and human rights protection in light of the Directive.
- Organization of a two-day conference aimed at raising awareness and strengthening dialogue on the transposition and implementation of the Directive among key stakeholders.
This project is supported by the DIHR and aligns with broader European efforts to ensure corporate accountability under the new legal framework.
Duration of the Project
The project runs from June 2024 to February 2025, culminating in the submission of a final report and the organization of the workshop. The deliverables are intended to support GNCHR’s long-term engagement with business and human rights issues within the framework of the CSDDD.
