GNCHR at the UNESCO Expert Roundtable for AI Supervisory Authorities

The panel of the event

The Greek National Commission for Human Rights (GNCHR) participated in the UNESCO Expert Roundtable for AI Supervisory Authorities. The Second Expert Roundtable ΙΙ on Capacity Building for AI Supervisory Authorities, took place on 30 September 2025 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris and brought together experts from supervising and regulatory bodies, national human rights institutions, academia, and international organisations to advance global efforts in responsible AI oversight. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in critical sectors ensuring that supervising authorities are equipped with the skills, tools, and cross-sectoral knowledge to evaluate and supervise AI systems is essential.

This roundtable is part of a broader capacity-building project “Supervising AI by Competent Authorities,” led by UNESCO, to support its key partner, the Dutch Authority for Digital Infrastructure (RDI), with support from the European Commission (SG REFORM).

The GNCHR was represented by the GNCHR President, Professor Maria Gavouneli and Dr. Christos Tsevas, GNCHR Human Rights Advisor and participated actively in the discussions of the Roundtable with a focus on the relation between human rights and artificial intelligence, given that the GNCHR is included in the list of the Ministry of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence under the EU Artificial Intelligence Regulation 2024/1689 (AI Act) regarding national authorities and bodies that enforce or supervise compliance with EU obligations to protect fundamental rights when using high-risk AI systems.
